13-Year-Old Boy Breaks State Fishing Record with Massive Tiger Trout Catch
A 13-year-old boy from Kemmerer, Wyoming, has made headlines after breaking a state fishing record by catching a massive tiger trout from the Viva Naughton Reservoir. Jaxon Krall reeled in the 12.77 pound fish, which stretches 31.25 inches long and has a girth of 16.75 inches, according to a press release from the Wyoming Game & Fish Department (WGFD).
Krall caught the fish using a Thomas Buoyant lure, surpassing the previous state record of 11.93 pounds for tiger trout caught on the same reservoir. “I was fishing for anything that would bite, but I knew when I hooked it that it was big,” said Krall, according to the release.
Tiger trout are a sterile hybrid of the brook trout and brown trout, making Krall’s catch even more impressive. His father, Robert Krall, shared that Jaxon was thrilled to land the fish and become the new Wyoming state record holder for tiger trout.
Looking ahead, Jaxon Krall expressed his eagerness to return to the reservoir to try and catch another tiger trout, but this time he plans to release the fish back into the water. The WGFD officials explained that stocking tiger trout in the reservoir was aimed at curbing the population of Utah chub and providing diversity to the fishery.
Robb Keith, Game and Fish fisheries supervisor in the Green River Region, praised the performance of tiger trout in Viva Naughton, stating that the reservoir is expected to continue producing exceptional fish. Anglers are advised to use lures, flies, and baits that resemble the forage fish eaten by tiger trout for a successful fishing experience.
