These gangs have historical ties to political parties, with G-9 affiliated with the ruling party and G-Pèp supporting opposition parties. The gangs have taken over crucial infrastructure, making it difficult for essential supplies to reach the people.
One of the prominent gang leaders, Jimmy Chérizier, also known as Barbecue, has emerged as a key figure in the current crisis. Known for his ruthlessness, he has been accused of leading massacres and orchestrating attacks on neighborhoods. Despite his violent past, Chérizier has recently adopted a more conciliatory tone, expressing a desire to overthrow the government and establish a new order in Haiti.
The international community, particularly Kenya, has responded to Haiti’s plea for help, with plans to deploy a multinational force led by Kenya to combat the gangs. However, logistical and legal challenges have delayed the deployment of police officers to Haiti.
