President Biden delivered a fiery State of the Union address on Thursday evening, taking direct aim at his predecessor, former President Trump, and Republican lawmakers. With negative approval ratings and trailing Trump in the latest polling average for their general election rematch, Biden did not hold back as he addressed a joint session of Congress.

In his speech, Biden referenced Trump thirteen times, accusing him of telling Russian President Putin to “do whatever the hell you want.” The president also criticized Republican lawmakers sitting in front of him, drawing applause from Democrats but harsh criticism from Republicans.

While some praised Biden’s energy and vigor during the address, others, including former speechwriters for President George W. Bush, called it the most partisan State of the Union they’ve heard. The speech was described as an “utter disgrace” and unprecedented in its direct attacks on the opposition.

Despite the mixed reactions, Democratic consultant Maria Cardona commended Biden for his scathing contrast with Trump and his direct connection with the American people. She noted that Republicans had nowhere else to go in their criticism, indicating that Biden had delivered a strong performance.

Biden highlighted the economic rebound during his tenure and addressed the crisis at the southern border, but some critics felt he missed the mark on these key issues. Polls show that Americans have concerns about his physical and mental ability to handle another term in office, but Biden addressed these doubts with humor towards the end of his speech.

Overall, the State of the Union address was seen as more of a campaign speech than a traditional address, with Biden showing a fighting spirit and hitting popular issues. As the oldest president in history, Biden acknowledged his age and the challenges it presents, signaling a strategic move in his reelection campaign.
