New York City is known for its urban legends, from alligators in the sewers to buried treasure on Liberty Island. But there’s one underground society that has been quietly thriving in the art world scene – the Lesbian and Bisexual Backgammon League (L.B.B.L.).
The league, formed in 2017, has become a gathering place for a diverse group of women, men, and nonbinary individuals from the art world and creative industries. Organized via WhatsApp, the league’s events are held every five or six months and attract a mix of art-world figures, start-up founders, and architects.
At a recent tournament held at the Bortolami gallery in TriBeCa, players gathered to compete in the ancient game of backgammon. The rules are simple: move all 15 of your pieces around the board and off the playing surface before your opponent does. Luck and skill play a role, making it an ideal game for newcomers.
The atmosphere at L.B.B.L. events is refreshingly nonhierarchical, with players of all levels competing against each other. The central pot at the most recent tournament was worth $570, with side bets adding to the excitement. From upgraded app subscriptions to free interior design services, players put it all on the line for a chance to win.
The venue for the tournament, hosted by gallery owner Stefania Bortolami, was a sophisticated setting adorned with artwork by represented artists. Food and drinks were provided to keep players fueled and focused, with mezcal, natural wine, and kombucha flowing freely.
In the end, the tournament came down to four players, including architect Koray Duman, who emerged victorious. Despite the outcome, the spirit of camaraderie and competition prevailed, with Duman promising to buy drinks for his fellow players.
