The Chicago Bears are making moves to bolster their secondary this offseason, with the latest addition being All-Pro safety Kevin Byard. Byard, who was released by the Philadelphia Eagles, wasted no time in signing a two-year deal with the Bears.

According to reports, the deal is worth $15 million at its base. Byard, who is 30 years old, visited the Bears on Friday and was impressed with the organization, especially since there is a starting spot available following Eddie Jackson’s release.

The Eagles, like many other teams in the league, are looking to shed salary cap, leading to the release of top talent in various positions, including safety. Byard’s addition to the Bears comes on the heels of the team signing cornerback Jaylon Johnson to a massive four-year extension.

General Manager Ryan Poles has been busy investing in the defense, with signings like Montez Sweat at edge rusher and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. With more cap space and two Top 10 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, including the first overall pick, the Bears are positioning themselves to be a strong contender in the 2024 season.

Byard was traded to the Eagles from the Tennessee Titans in October and finished the year with impressive stats. His last All-Pro season was in 2021, where he showcased his skills with 88 tackles, one sack, five interceptions, and six passes defended for the Titans.

With these recent moves, the Bears are shaping up to be a formidable team on paper for the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on the Bears’ offseason moves and preparations for the 2024 NFL season.
