Airbnb Bans Indoor Security Cameras in Listings Worldwide
In a move to prioritize privacy and address concerns about surveillance, Airbnb announced this week that it will ban the use of all indoor security cameras in its listings worldwide. The update to the current policy, which previously allowed cameras in common areas like hallways and living rooms, will take effect on April 30.
The decision comes after reports of unscrupulous hosts using hidden cameras to spy on guests, raising alarm about privacy in vacation rentals. Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, Juniper Downs, stated that the changes were made in consultation with guests, hosts, and privacy experts to create clear rules for the community.
While outdoor security cameras, noise decibel monitors, and doorbell cameras will still be allowed, hosts must disclose their presence and general location before guests book. These devices cannot be used in areas where there is an expectation of privacy, such as enclosed outdoor showers or saunas.
With over 7 million listings in more than 100,000 cities worldwide, Airbnb is a major player in the short-term rental market. By implementing these new rules, the company aims to provide greater clarity and protection for both guests and hosts.
