Itay Chen, a 19-year-old U.S. and Israeli citizen who was thought to have been taken hostage on October 7, was tragically killed that day, his parents revealed on Tuesday. The heartbreaking news came after the Israeli military informed Ruby and Hagit Chen that their son had been killed while defending civilians on the border of Gaza during the Hamas-led invasion.

The Chens expressed their devastation in a statement, saying, “Our hearts are broken. We loved him so much, and we would have done anything to bring him home alive.” Itay, described by his father as the “life of the party” and the “connector” of their family, was a multitalented and fun-loving young man who enjoyed playing basketball and spending time with his PlayStation.

Growing up in Israel, Itay frequently visited his father’s hometown of New York, creating cherished memories with his family. Until his death, Itay Chen was believed to be the youngest American hostage still in Hamas captivity, adding to the urgency of the situation for his family and the U.S. government.

The Chens thanked the Biden administration and members of Congress for their support and called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Biden to do everything possible to bring Itay’s remains and the other hostages home. The families of the remaining hostages in Gaza are anxiously awaiting their loved ones’ safe return, with time running out for those still in captivity.

Efforts to secure a deal between Israel and Hamas for a cease-fire and the release of hostages have so far been unsuccessful, with both sides blaming each other for the lack of progress. Some families have demanded more action from Israeli officials, while others support continued military action against Hamas.

President Biden expressed his condolences to the Chen family and reiterated his commitment to bringing the hostages home. He shared a touching moment when Itay’s father and brother visited the White House, presenting him with a menorah as a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of darkness.

The tragic loss of Itay Chen serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflict in the region and the human toll it takes on families and communities. As efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining hostages, the Chen family and others affected by this crisis remain in the thoughts and prayers of many around the world.
