Greta Gerwig, the co-writer and director of the upcoming film ‘Barbie,’ recently shared some behind-the-scenes insights into a musical sequence from the movie. In a candid interview, Gerwig revealed the creative process behind the elaborate scene, which features the character Ken singing and dancing in a whimsical setting.

Describing the sequence as a mix of physical comedy and vaudevillian style, Gerwig explained how she wanted the fighting scenes to resemble a dance, with a touch of Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin’s comedic flair. The scene also includes Barbie characters in pink boilersuits, a tribute to Gerwig’s personal style, as well as a dream ballet stage inspired by ‘Singin’ in the Rain.’

The musical number in the sequence was not originally in the script, but Gerwig enlisted the help of Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt to write a song from Ken’s perspective. Actor Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in the film, initially had reservations about singing but ultimately embraced the challenge. The result is a catchy and playful song that sets the tone for the lively and imaginative sequence.

Gerwig’s passion for theater and the joy of creating shines through in her approach to the scene, which she hopes will inspire audiences to embrace their own creativity. With a nod to classic musicals and a touch of whimsy, the ‘Barbie’ sequence promises to be a highlight of the film, inviting viewers to join in the fun and celebration of imagination.
