Margaret Grade, the unconventional innkeeper of Manka’s Inverness Lodge near the Point Reyes National Seashore, passed away on Feb. 28 at the age of 72. Known for her unique approach to hospitality and her ability to cater to both farmers and film stars alike, Grade’s legacy leaves a lasting impact on the community she served.
Despite her initial lack of experience in running an inn, Grade’s innate ability to anticipate guests’ needs and create a welcoming atmosphere set Manka’s apart as a destination for food enthusiasts and celebrities. Her dedication to hyperlocal cuisine and her partnership with chef Daniel DeLong elevated the dining experience at the lodge, drawing praise from visitors and locals alike.
Beyond her role as an innkeeper, Grade was a trailblazer in the hospitality industry, transforming Manka’s into a haven for creativity and culinary excellence. While the loss of Manka’s Inverness Lodge in a fire in 2006 was a devastating blow, Grade’s spirit and determination lived on in her subsequent ventures, including the acclaimed Sir and Star restaurant in Olema.
