Legendary British rock star Steve Harley, best known for his hit single “Make Me Smile,” has passed away at the age of 73. The news of his death was confirmed by his family on Facebook, stating that he died at his home. While the cause of death was not disclosed, it was revealed that Harley had been undergoing treatment for cancer.

Harley rose to fame as the frontman of the band Cockney Rebel in the early 1970s. His iconic song “Make Me Smile” topped the U.K. music charts in 1975, showcasing his unique vocals and melancholic lyrics set against the backdrop of upbeat instrumentals typical of the era. The success of the song solidified Harley’s status as a rock music icon.

In addition to his chart-topping hits in the U.K., Harley also found success internationally with songs like “Sebastian,” which reached No. 1 in Belgium and the Netherlands. He later collaborated with singer Sarah Brightman on the original recording of “Phantom of the Opera” for the musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Born in London in 1951, Harley’s passion for music was sparked by his mother, who sang jazz and swing in the 1940s. Despite facing health challenges in his childhood, including multiple surgeries, Harley found solace in literature and music, ultimately leading him to pursue a career in journalism before transitioning to a successful music career.

Throughout his life, Harley remained dedicated to his craft, performing on stage well into his final years. His legacy as a talented musician and performer will continue to live on in the hearts of his fans and the music industry as a whole.
