Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken Issues Warning to China Over South China Sea Tensions

In a bold statement on Tuesday, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken warned China that any “armed” attack against Philippine vessels in the South China Sea would trigger a mutual self-defense pact between the United States and Manila. This warning comes amidst rising tensions in the region that could potentially lead to armed conflict between the U.S. and Beijing.

During a visit to Manila, Mr. Blinken emphasized the importance of diplomatic measures to deter Chinese provocations, which have included ramming Philippine vessels and using water cannons against them. While he did not explicitly label these actions as “armed” attacks, he highlighted the need for clear statements in support of the Philippines and against such provocative actions that threaten peace, security, and freedom of navigation in the region.

Mr. Blinken’s visit to the Philippines also aimed to show strong American support for the country, particularly under the leadership of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has shifted the nation’s foreign policy back towards Washington. The White House announced a joint summit with the Philippines and Japan, highlighting the historic momentum in U.S.-Philippines relations.

Despite the positive economic and strategic benefits of the renewed friendship between the U.S. and the Philippines, the threat of conflict with China remains a looming concern. The two countries have been bound by a mutual self-defense treaty since 1951, which now serves as a deterrent against Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Chinese media responded to Mr. Blinken’s visit with criticism, accusing Manila of illegally trespassing in China’s territory and attempting to disrupt the situation in the South China Sea. The nationalist newspaper Global Times warned that Washington’s involvement in the region could escalate regional strategic confrontation to unprecedented levels.

As Mr. Blinken continues his diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, including stops in Cairo and Jeddah, he remains focused on brokering a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas and establishing lasting regional peace. The Secretary of State’s visit to the Philippines underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region and the delicate balance between maintaining diplomatic relations and standing firm against aggression.
