Residents of Ridgely, Maryland, were left shocked and skeptical after the town made the largely unexplained decision to suspend its entire police force. The small town on Maryland’s Eastern Shore announced the suspension of officers from the Ridgely Police Department, leaving residents in the dark about the reasons behind the shutdown.
Longtime resident Laura Cline expressed her concerns, stating, “What’s very concerning is that they didn’t communicate with us in an honest and open way. Treat us with respect. We’re adults — thinking, rational adults who deserve the truth.” Similarly, business owner Holly Justice said, “We were blindsided. It makes you question the integrity of people who are supposed to protect and serve.”
The town’s website revealed that the three-member commission had suspended the entire police department with pay, pending an investigation by the Office of State Prosecutor. This lack of transparency has left residents like Gennie Woo questioning the events, saying, “It doesn’t add up. Everybody is skeptical about what happened. We just want to know how and why.”
In the meantime, neighboring law enforcement agencies, such as the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police, have stepped in to respond to emergency calls. However, concerns about slower response times and potential criminal activity have arisen among residents.
Despite the low crime rates in Caroline County over the years, with only four homicides reported since 2000, the absence of the local police force has left residents uneasy. The Ridgely Police Department was known for its community involvement, including participating in events and supporting local businesses.
As residents await more information about the suspension of their police force, the town remains on edge, questioning the decision and its implications for public safety.
