Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist’s Fascination with Bags: A Phenomenological Investigation

Renowned Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist has a unique and fascinating obsession with bags, which she keeps in a vast collection in her Zurich studio. Known for her immersive sound and video installations, Rist believes that the bag is one of the first human tools, providing independence and readiness for escape.

Rist’s collection includes all kinds of bags, from leather satchels to plastic bags, each holding its own story and significance. With around 2,000 pieces, most acquired from thrift stores or as gifts, Rist’s collection is a reflection of her lifelong fascination with containers and their narratives.

From her first purchase of a handbag made from lacquered woven corn leaves in Naples at the age of 10 to her latest acquisition of a beautiful leather shoulder bag in Japan, Rist’s love for bags knows no bounds. She even admits to obtaining a bag through dubious methods as a teenager, showcasing her deep connection to these everyday objects.

In addition to her bag collection, Rist considers herself a collector of collections, with assortments of toys, cowbells, and even broken pencil tips from first grade. However, after reflecting on her bags during a recent interview, Rist contemplates letting go of some of her collection, signaling a potential shift in her relationship with these cherished items.

As Rist’s bag collection continues to evolve and inspire her artistic endeavors, it remains a testament to her unique perspective on the world and the stories that everyday objects can tell.
