Nicole Scherzinger to Make Broadway Debut in Revival of “Sunset Boulevard”
Nicole Scherzinger, best known for her work as a musician, actress, and television talent show judge, is set to make her Broadway debut in Jamie Lloyd’s reimagined revival of “Sunset Boulevard” this fall. The production, which received rave reviews during its run in London, will open at the St. James Theater on October 20.
Scherzinger will take on the iconic role of Norma Desmond, a faded film star from the silent film era, in this dark thriller based on the 1950 film by Billy Wilder. The musical, featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, follows Desmond as she forms a connection with an aspiring young screenwriter in hopes of reigniting her career.
The revival, which was nominated for 11 Olivier Awards, including best actress in a musical for Scherzinger, is a stripped-down production that focuses on the psychological and emotional journey of the characters. Director Jamie Lloyd, known for his stark and spare productions, has created a “psychological chamber piece” that delves into the complexities of the characters.
Scherzinger, who studied theater in high school and college, has described this role as a “career-defining performance” and has committed to nine months in the production. She will be joined on Broadway by her Olivier-nominated co-stars Tom Francis, Grace Hodgett-Young, and David Thaxton.
“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life,” Scherzinger said in an interview. “I can’t believe that it’s finally about to happen. I’m excited to explore even more and go deeper with this character on Broadway.”
