The New York Times recently conducted a survey among 81 men who shared their experiences with off-the-rack suits purchased since 2021. The standout style that emerged from the responses was J. Crew’s Ludlow suit, introduced around the time of Barack Obama’s first presidential election in 2008.

The Ludlow suit, known for its slim fit and starting at $298, quickly gained popularity and was described as “refined and classic” by many respondents. Some men even owned multiple versions of the Ludlow suit, citing its versatility for both professional settings and the dance floor.

However, the survey also revealed that men have found other appealing off-the-rack options. Suits from Sid Mashburn and SuitSupply were mentioned multiple times, with SuitSupply’s Havana suit and Sid Mashburn’s Kincaid No. 3 Suit receiving praise for their fit and quality.

For those looking for less slim alternatives to the Ludlow, J. Crew’s Kenmare and Crosby suits were highlighted as viable options. The Kenmare, introduced in 2022, offers a more relaxed fit compared to the Ludlow, while the Crosby suit is described as classic and starts at $198.

Additionally, Todd Snyder’s suits, known for their high-quality fabrics, were favored by respondents in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. The brand’s modern yet timeless designs have attracted a loyal following among those seeking a sophisticated look.

Younger respondents, particularly Gen Z-ers and young millennials, showed a preference for double-breasted jackets, with brands like Stoffa gaining popularity for their stylish and contemporary designs. The survey also highlighted other notable brands to consider when shopping for suits, including Men’s Wearhouse, Tom Ford, and Selected.

Overall, the survey provided valuable insights into the evolving landscape of off-the-rack suits, showcasing a diverse range of styles and brands that cater to different preferences and tastes among male shoppers.
