House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries Criticizes Republicans Pushing for Impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., took to social media to express his disapproval of extreme MAGA Republicans who are pushing for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a brief post on Thursday evening, Jeffries called the efforts a “phony political stunt” and told them to “get lost.”
The U.S. Senate is set to receive House-passed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas next month, with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., notifying Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that the formal handover will take place on April 10. Johnson urged Schumer to conduct the impeachment trial “expeditiously.”
In February, all but three House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the U.S. southern border, marking the first time a cabinet secretary had been impeached since 1876. Despite the impeachment, the trial is unlikely to result in a conviction.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the Senate prepares to initiate the impeachment trial once the articles are received.
