Binance Executive Sues Nigerian Authorities Over Human Rights Violations

Tigran Gambaryan, an executive from the leading cryptocurrency exchange Binance, has taken legal action against Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Gambaryan alleges that his fundamental human rights were violated and the Nigerian constitution breached following his detention and passport confiscation upon his arrival in Nigeria in February.

The lawsuit demands the return of Gambaryan’s passport and a public apology for the alleged mishandling of his case. Gambaryan insists that he was not informed of any offenses committed and is being detained solely to pressure Binance. The court session has been postponed to April 8, with no decision made as the attorneys of the ONSA and EFCC were absent.

This legal battle comes amidst broader challenges Binance faces in Nigeria, including tax evasion charges by the government. Gambaryan was detained alongside Nadeem Anjarwalla, Binance’s Regional Manager for Africa, who managed to escape detention. The incident sheds light on the complexities of navigating international regulations in the crypto industry.

Nigeria is not the only country where Binance is facing legal issues, as the exchange is also under scrutiny in the Philippines for operating without the required licensing. The outcome of Gambaryan’s lawsuit could have significant implications for Binance and the broader crypto industry. Stay tuned for updates as the case unfolds.
