World Central Kitchen Workers Killed in Gaza Strike
Tragedy struck the disaster relief organization World Central Kitchen on Monday night in the Gaza Strip, as seven of its workers were killed in an Israeli strike on their convoy. Among the victims were individuals from Australia, Britain, Gaza, Poland, and a dual citizen of the United States and Canada.
Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, identified the Australian victim as Lalzawmi Frankcom, known as Zomi. Wong praised Frankcom’s dedication to serving others, including her fellow Australians during natural disasters. Last month, a video was posted by World Central Kitchen showing Frankcom assisting a chef in preparing food for hungry Gazans.
In Britain, foreign secretary David Cameron confirmed that British nationals were among those killed in the incident, but provided no further details.
A Palestinian driver and translator for World Central Kitchen was also among the victims. Photos of his funeral in Rafah, southern Gaza, were released by Agence France-Presse and Reuters.
Damian Sobol, an aid worker from Poland, lost his life in the attack. The mayor of Przemysl, Wojciech Bakun, expressed deep sorrow over Sobol’s death, describing him as a “fantastic boy.”
Information regarding the identity of the dual citizen from the United States and Canada has not yet been disclosed.
The tragic loss of these dedicated humanitarian workers has sent shockwaves through the global community, highlighting the dangers faced by those providing aid in conflict zones. World Central Kitchen has vowed to continue its mission of serving those in need, despite the devastating loss of their colleagues.
