Stick Nation: The Rise of Stick Reviews on Instagram
Last summer, during a hiking trip to Arches National Park in Utah, Stick Nation was born. Boone Hogg, Logan Jugler, and some friends were joking around as they hiked towards Delicate Arch when the idea of reviewing sticks as one would a sculpture or valuable antique came to them.
Mr. Hogg, 30, took out his phone and filmed Mr. Jugler, also 30, as he discussed the qualities of a stick he had picked up. To their surprise, the stick seemed more interesting than the others nearby, with Mr. Jugler giving it a 7 out of 10 rating for its weathered, worn, and comfortable feel in the hand.
What started as a wilderness jest has now turned into Official Stick Reviews on Instagram, attracting 40,000 followers who engage in discussions and submit photos or videos of sticks for review. The account has even expanded to TikTok.
The duo behind Stick Nation has established various metrics for judging sticks, including size, shape, color, and texture. They have also created pseudoscientific tests like the McMurray Bend and the Tennison Curve Scale to evaluate the sticks.
Despite some debates within the community, Stick Nation has brought together hobbyists who share a passion for appreciating the simplicity of sticks. Mr. Hogg and Mr. Jugler have even created merchandise and continue to develop lore around the concept of the stick aficionado.
As Mr. Hogg puts it, “Wherever the stick-heads in Stick Nation want to take it, we’ll go.” Stick Nation is not just about sticks; it’s about finding joy in the simple things and connecting with others over a shared appreciation for the beauty of nature’s humble creations.
