Macedonian Filmmaker Goran Stolevski Finds Success Amid Personal Crisis

Goran Stolevski, a talented filmmaker from Macedonia, has been on a writing spree, producing three critically acclaimed features in just three years. Despite his recent success with theatrical releases, Stolevski’s journey to the top has been marked by periods of professional uncertainty and personal crisis.

At the age of 30, Stolevski found himself unemployed and struggling to get his projects off the ground. During this time, he wrote four feature screenplays in just nine months while living in Bristol, England. Two of these screenplays eventually became his recent hits, “You Won’t Be Alone” and “Housekeeping for Beginners.”

After winning a prize at the Sundance Film Festival for his short film “Would You Look at Her,” Stolevski faced another two years of unemployment, during which he wrote four more screenplays. Now 38, Stolevski has written at least 10 scripts before making his feature debut with “You Won’t Be Alone,” a captivating tale about a shape-shifting witch in a 19th-century Macedonian village.

His latest film, “Housekeeping for Beginners,” which follows the chaotic interactions of an unconventional queer family, is set to hit theaters soon. Stolevski’s films are known for their emotional depth and unique storytelling, drawing audiences into unfamiliar worlds filled with complex characters.

Born in North Macedonia and later moving to Australia, Stolevski draws inspiration from his experiences as a migrant and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. His films often center on outsiders and marginalized individuals, reflecting his own journey of self-acceptance and exploration.

Despite his success, Stolevski remains humble and focused on pushing the boundaries of storytelling. His films have been recognized internationally, representing both Australia and North Macedonia at the Academy Awards. With a unique vision and a commitment to humanist storytelling, Stolevski is making a significant impact on the world of cinema.

As he continues to explore new horizons and tell diverse stories, Stolevski’s future in filmmaking looks bright. With a growing audience hungry for his thought-provoking narratives, Stolevski is poised to make a lasting impression on the world of cinema.
