Luxury Hotel Maria Set to Elevate Helsinki’s Hospitality Scene

When construction at the Hotel Maria is completed in June, Helsinki will welcome a new player in its luxury hospitality scene. The hotel will boast 159 chandeliers hanging from the ceilings of its 79 rooms, 38 suites, and public areas, along with a bar serving 31 types of Champagne. Renovations on its four buildings will include the restoration of 42 kilometers of original moldings, setting the stage for a “true five-star city hotel,” according to Heli Mende, the commercial director.

While Finland is known for its pristine outdoors and unique experiences like glass igloos in Lapland, the country has historically lacked elaborate luxury infrastructure compared to other global hubs. However, with the opening of Hotel Maria, Helsinki is making strides in catering to international luxury seekers.

The hotel, named after Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia, features neutral hues, white marble, Finnish art, and modern lighting. It offers two restaurants, a spa, and top-tier suites with amenities like saunas and steam rooms. The initial guests, including wedding parties and curious locals, have already started to experience the hotel’s opulent offerings.

In addition to Hotel Maria, Helsinki is also seeing luxury upgrades at Hotel Kamp and other accommodations in the city. The growth in luxury providers across Finland, from the capital to Lapland, is creating a network that maintains a high level of luxury throughout the country.

As Finland’s luxury scene evolves, with tasting menus, celebrity chefs, and international cuisine becoming more common, the country is positioning itself as a destination for luxury travelers. The opening of Hotel Maria, with its extensive chandelier collection and lavish amenities, is a testament to Helsinki’s growing appeal to luxury seekers.

For those like furniture designer Lincoln Kayiwa, Hotel Maria offers a glimpse of luxury that transports guests to a different world. With its grand chandeliers and upscale offerings, the hotel provides a unique and luxurious experience that rivals top destinations around the globe.
