The Olivier Awards 2024 were a night to remember as the musical “Sunset Boulevard” starring Nicole Scherzinger swept the board with seven wins, including one for Scherzinger herself for best actress in a musical. Other notable winners included Sarah Snook and Mark Gatiss, who picked up awards for their performances.
One of the highlights of the evening was when Sarah Snook revealed that she would be going home with “chicken” after winning the award. She explained that “chookas” is Australian slang for good luck and that back in the day, a full house at a show would result in the cast being given chickens to eat afterwards.
Andrew Scott expressed his desire to take theatre out of London, while James Norton shared that his role in “A Little Life” was one of the most challenging things he has ever done. Hannah Waddingham impressed with three outfit changes during the ceremony, and David Tennant provided some serious jacket envy with his sparkly outfit.
Nicole Scherzinger, who won best actress in a musical, described herself as an “honorary Brit” and professed her love for Sunday roasts. Mark Gatiss, who won best actor, humorously called his win “vulgar” given the nature of his character in the play.
“Stranger Things: The First Shadow” won two awards, much to the surprise and excitement of the team behind the play. Arlene Phillips, at the age of 80, won her first Olivier award for choreography, and the cast of “Operation Mincemeat” warned theatregoers attending Monday’s show to expect a lively celebration.
Overall, the Olivier Awards 2024 showcased the best of British theatre and celebrated the talent and dedication of the performers and creators in the industry.
