The largest Christian university in the U.S., Grand Canyon University (GCU), is facing a crackdown from the Department of Education, led by Secretary Miguel Cardona. The department has imposed a hefty fine of $37.7 million on GCU for allegedly misleading students about the cost of its doctoral programs. This has sparked a fierce battle between GCU officials and federal agencies, with GCU accusing the Department of Education of bias and unfair targeting.

During a House Appropriations Committee hearing, Rep. Rosa DeLauro labeled GCU as a “predatory for-profit school” and questioned Cardona about the administration’s efforts to shut down the university. Cardona responded by emphasizing the need to crack down on schools that prey on students, declaring that the department’s actions are aimed at sending a message to prevent such practices.

GCU has appealed the fine and is pushing back against the allegations, claiming that the Department of Education’s actions are based on misinformation and bias. The university is demanding a retraction of the statements made by Cardona and is prepared to take further legal action to defend its reputation.

The controversy surrounding GCU has raised concerns about the federal government’s approach to regulating higher education institutions, particularly those with religious affiliations. Organizations like the American Principles Project have launched petitions to protect Christian colleges from what they perceive as targeted attacks by the Biden administration.

The situation has also led to legal action, with the Goldwater Institute suing the Department of Education for refusing to disclose public records related to the fine imposed on GCU. The institute alleges that the department’s actions may be part of a coordinated effort to target successful universities based on flimsy allegations.

As the battle between GCU and federal agencies continues, the future of the university and other faith-based organizations remains uncertain. The Department of Education has yet to respond to the allegations and demands made by GCU officials and advocacy groups. The outcome of this dispute could have far-reaching implications for the oversight of higher education institutions in the U.S.
