The Getty House, the official residence of Mayor Karen Bass in Los Angeles, was broken into early Sunday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The intruder was taken into custody after entering the residence by smashing a window while the mayor and her family were inside.
Although details on the break-in were limited, Mayor Bass’s office confirmed that she and her family were unharmed. The mayor expressed gratitude to the LAPD for their swift response and apprehension of the suspect.
The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed, and the investigation is ongoing. Tony Im, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department, stated that more information will be released once the suspect is processed.
The Getty House is located in the Windsor Square neighborhood of Central Los Angeles. Despite the city’s previous struggles with homelessness and violent crime, recent data shows a decrease in violent crime rates. Homicides in the city decreased by 17 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year, although there were slight increases in property crimes and motor vehicle thefts.
In her recent State of the City Address, Mayor Bass highlighted the city’s progress in reducing crime rates and homelessness. However, this is not the first security incident involving the mayor, as her personal home was burglarized before she took office.
This break-in at the Getty House is reminiscent of other high-profile security breaches involving politicians, such as the assault on Nancy Pelosi’s husband at their home in San Francisco and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s repeated experiences with swatting incidents. The LAPD has not yet classified the Getty House break-in, pending the completion of the booking process for the suspect.
