Playwright James Graham, originally from Mansfield, is set to rewrite his play “Dear England” to include the dramatic journey of the Three Lions in Euro 2024. The play, which features Joseph Fiennes as England manager Gareth Southgate, will now reflect the team’s defeat to Spain in the final.

Graham, who was also asked to write a script for a BBC montage, expressed his admiration for Southgate, calling him an “unlikely hero” who has transformed English football over the past eight years. Despite the heartbreaking loss to Spain, Graham believes that Southgate’s leadership has set the team on a path to success in the future.

The playwright emphasized the importance of enjoying the journey as an England fan, rather than focusing solely on the destination. He highlighted Southgate’s unique approach to leadership, describing him as a quiet yet impactful figure in English football.

As Southgate’s contract is set to expire in December, fans are eager to see what the future holds for the England manager and the national team. Graham’s updated play will capture the emotions and challenges faced by the Three Lions on their quest for glory.
