Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., is calling on President Joe Biden to acknowledge the tragic death of Georgia college student Laken Riley during his upcoming State of the Union address. Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at Augusta University, was killed last month, and the suspect charged in relation to her death is Jose Ibarra, who illegally immigrated into the U.S. in 2022.

Banks emphasized the importance of Biden recognizing the impact of Riley’s death, stating, “At just six years old, Laken knew she wanted to be a nurse so she could help people. She was living her dream until it was shattered by Joe Biden’s wide open border.” The congressman has also introduced the “Laken Riley Act,” which would require ICE to detain migrants arrested for theft.

Despite Banks’ plea, the White House has not yet responded to the request for comment. Banks criticized Biden for his handling of the southern border and immigration issues, pointing out the reversal of Trump-era policies such as “Remain in Mexico,” Title 42, and the border wall construction.

Riley’s mother, Allyson Phillips, has been advocating for her daughter by changing her Facebook profile picture to a heart in UGA’s colors with the hashtag “#SayHerName.” Banks urged Biden to break his silence on Riley’s death and take action to secure the border to prevent further tragedies.

As the nation awaits Biden’s State of the Union address, the spotlight remains on the call for justice for Laken Riley and the need for stronger border security measures.
