After almost a decade of anticipation, fans of the Civilization video game series are finally getting a glimpse of what’s to come with the upcoming release of Civilization VII in February. The new game is set to explore the evolution of the UK’s capital city, London, from its Roman origins to the present day.

Lead developer Ed Beach revealed that the inspiration for Civilization VII came from a map of Londinium, the Roman-era name for London. The game will allow players to experience the growth and changes of the city over time, starting from the Roman era and progressing through different historical periods.

Unlike previous versions of the game, where players were locked into playing as a specific leader and civilization, Civilization VII will allow for more dynamic gameplay. Players can start as the Romans, then transition to the Normans, and eventually play as Britain, building a growing England that goes beyond just the capital city.

The game’s developers drew inspiration from historical maps of London, showing how the city evolved over centuries. From Roman forts and temples to medieval inns and taverns, players will have the opportunity to build upon the layers of history that have shaped the city.

In addition to the historical accuracy and detailed city-building mechanics, Civilization VII will also feature significant changes to gameplay mechanics. Computer-controlled civilizations will behave more intelligently, and players will have access to unique civics and units that can travel through rivers.

With a graphical overhaul, new playable leaders like Benjamin Franklin and Hatshepsut, and a revamped AI system, Civilization VII promises to be a fresh and exciting addition to the beloved series. Fans can look forward to experiencing the game’s unique take on history and city-building when it launches next year.
