Three people have been killed in a tragic attack at the Allenby Bridge crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank, according to Israeli officials. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that three Israeli civilians lost their lives in a shooting incident at the border point.
The attacker, who arrived from the Jordanian side in a truck, opened fire after exiting the vehicle, prompting security forces to take action and “eliminate” the gunman. The IDF is currently inspecting the truck for any signs of explosives.
Video footage captured the assailant walking to the terminal and firing his weapon before being shot dead by Israeli security forces. The victims, all men in their 50s, were pronounced dead by medics.
Both Jordan and Israel have closed the border point as investigations into the incident are underway. Additionally, all of Israel’s land crossings with Jordan have been shut down following the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, calling the incident a “loathsome terrorist” act. The Allenby Bridge, also known as the King Hussein Bridge, serves as the only official crossing point between the West Bank and Jordan, located halfway between Amman and Jerusalem.
The crossing is significant as it is the sole entry point to the West Bank that bypasses Israel. In response to a recent surge in violence in the West Bank, Israeli forces conducted a major operation in Jenin city and its refugee camp, withdrawing after nine days.
Israel has emphasized its efforts to combat terrorism and prevent deadly attacks on Israelis in the region. The incident at the Allenby Bridge serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions and security challenges faced in the area.
