Peru’s former President Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of human rights abuses and corruption, has passed away at the age of 86, his daughter confirmed.
Fujimori, who governed Peru from 1990 to 2000, faced allegations of corruption and human rights abuses during his time in office. His tough stance against a left-wing guerrilla insurgency led to accusations of human rights violations.
After fleeing the country, Fujimori was arrested, extradited, and ultimately convicted and jailed for a number of offenses, including corruption and abuse of power. Despite his controversial legacy, he was released from prison in December 2021 after serving more than 15 years behind bars.
His daughter, Keiko Fujimori, announced his passing on social media, stating that he had lost his battle with cancer. The family asked for prayers for his soul and expressed gratitude for his life.
Fujimori’s authoritarian rule and crackdown on insurgencies resulted in the deaths of thousands of people during his time in power. Despite being sentenced to prison in 2009, he was granted a pardon in 2017 due to health concerns.
The former president’s passing marks the end of a tumultuous chapter in Peru’s history, leaving behind a complex legacy of power and controversy.
