Epic Games Accuses Samsung of Making Fortnite Download Too Difficult on Mobile Devices
In a legal complaint set to be filed on Monday, Epic Games has accused Samsung of creating unnecessary hurdles for users trying to download its popular video game Fortnite on certain mobile devices. The complaint alleges that users have to go through a cumbersome process of “21 steps” before they can play the game on new Samsung products, which includes viewing security warning screens and changing settings.
According to Epic, this arduous process has led to a significant drop-off rate, with 50% of people giving up before completing the download. The company claims that on other Android phones and tablets, the process only requires 12 steps, highlighting the disparity in user experience.
The issue, Epic says, stems from a Samsung feature called Auto Blocker, which is enabled by default on the manufacturer’s latest products. This feature is designed to block malicious activity and prevent app installations from unauthorized sources, but Epic argues that it is hindering legitimate downloads of Fortnite and violating competition laws.
Samsung has vehemently denied these allegations, stating that users have the option to disable Auto Blocker if they choose. The company asserts that its features are designed with security, privacy, and user control in mind, and it remains committed to safeguarding users’ personal data.
Epic Games has been embroiled in legal battles with tech giants like Google and Apple over app store policies in the past. The game developer has previously taken both companies to court over disagreements about their app store operations, with varying outcomes.
Despite the challenges, Epic Games’ CEO Tim Sweeney remains steadfast in his pursuit of a level playing field for developers. He expressed disappointment in having to take legal action against Samsung but emphasized the importance of creating fair opportunities for all app developers.
