Representative Adam Schiff and former MLB star Steve Garvey secure spots in California Senate general election

In a surprising turn of events, Representative Adam Schiff and former Major League Baseball star Steve Garvey have advanced to the California general election for a Senate seat, according to The Associated Press. The election night returns showed that Schiff, a Democratic congressman from the Los Angeles area, and Garvey, a Republican political newcomer, had secured the top two spots on the November ballot.

The race, which also included Representative Katie Porter and Representative Barbara Lee, will determine who will replace the late Dianne Feinstein, who held the seat for over three decades. During the campaign, Porter accused Schiff and his supporters of engineering Garvey’s rise to ensure an easier election in November. Schiff, who had raised over $30 million, spent heavily on ads comparing Garvey to former President Donald Trump.

Despite the controversy surrounding the campaign, Schiff and Garvey are now set for a fall race where the odds are in Schiff’s favor. California has a significant Democratic voter registration advantage, and the state has not elected a Republican to statewide office in over a decade.

The low turnout in the primary election placed the decision in the hands of an older, whiter, and more conservative electorate. Republicans, who make up less than a quarter of California’s registered voters, cast over 31 percent of the ballots.

Schiff, a former federal prosecutor and prominent congressman, rose to national prominence during the first impeachment trial of Donald Trump. Porter, known for her whiteboard tutorials on national issues, gained recognition for her blunt takedowns of powerful leaders during congressional hearings.

Garvey, a well-known name in California due to his baseball career, entered the race late but quickly gained support from Republicans. In the upcoming general election, he plans to position himself as a unifying figure, refusing to disclose his stance on Trump.

The race is expected to be closely watched as Schiff and Garvey face off in a battle for the California Senate seat. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
