The Post Office scandal that rocked the UK and inspired the hit TV show Mr Bates vs the Post Office is now taking center stage in a new and unique way – as a theatre musical. The show, titled Make Good, delves into the human stories behind the scandal, focusing on the sub-postmasters who were wrongly convicted due to faulty computer software.

Co-writer Jeanie O’Hare explained that telling the story as a musical allows for a deeper exploration of the heartache, torment, and isolation experienced by the victims. The script for Make Good was written by O’Hare, who has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Yale School of Drama, while the songs were composed by Olivier Award-nominated Jim Fortune.

The musical is being performed in theatres and village halls across England by touring theatre companies Pentabus and New Perspectives to mark their 50th anniversaries. Each location features a different community choir performing with the cast, adding a unique and heartfelt element to the production.

The real sub-postmasters who were affected by the scandal have been involved in the process, with some attending rehearsals and providing feedback. Chris Trousdale, one of the individuals wrongly convicted, expressed that seeing the actors bring his story to life was a cathartic experience.

Make Good aims to shed light on the inner agony and struggles faced by those caught up in the Post Office scandal, offering a different perspective from previous adaptations of the story. The musical provides a platform for healing and connection, allowing audiences to engage with the emotional journey of the characters in a profound way.

The impact of Make Good extends beyond the stage, as it seeks to raise awareness and spark conversations about the miscarriage of justice that occurred. The musical is on tour until 1 December, offering audiences a powerful and moving portrayal of a dark chapter in the UK’s history.
