Israel’s national security council issued a warning on Wednesday urging Israelis to immediately leave certain tourist areas in southern Sri Lanka due to the threat of a possible terrorist attack. The advisory specifically mentioned the area of Arugam Bay and beaches in the south and west of the country, citing “current information about a terrorist threat focused on tourist areas and beaches.”
The security council did not provide specific details about the nature of the threat but cautioned Israelis in other parts of Sri Lanka to be vigilant and avoid large gatherings in public areas. The U.S. embassy in Sri Lanka also released a security alert, stating that it had received credible information about a potential attack targeting popular tourist locations in the Arugam Bay area.
In response to the warnings, Germany’s Foreign Ministry advised travelers to avoid the area or leave as soon as possible, citing indications of possible attacks on tourist destinations. Police in Sri Lanka have increased security in the region and are on high alert, with a focus on ensuring the safety of Israeli tourists who frequent the area for surfing.
Sri Lanka, known for its beautiful beaches, tea plantations, and historic temples, has been experiencing a resurgence in tourism as the country emerges from a severe financial crisis. Government data showed that 1.5 million tourists visited Sri Lanka in the first eight months of this year, including over 20,000 from Israel.
The situation is developing, and authorities are closely monitoring the security landscape in the region to ensure the safety of all visitors.
