Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson of North Carolina has secured the Republican nomination for governor, setting the stage for a historic showdown in the upcoming general election. If elected, Mr. Robinson would become the first Black governor of North Carolina, while his Democratic opponent, Attorney General Josh Stein, would be the state’s first Jewish governor.
Mr. Robinson’s political career has been marked by his rapid rise fueled by online support and his reputation as a political firebrand. His impassioned speech at a Greensboro City Council meeting in 2018, defending gun rights, went viral and catapulted him into the spotlight. Since then, he has become known for his incendiary comments on social issues, which have energized his Trump-aligned base and alienated Democrats.
Despite his controversial stances, Mr. Robinson made history as the first Black lieutenant governor of North Carolina in 2020. His upbringing in Greensboro, marked by poverty and abuse, has shaped his political philosophy and views on issues like trade and abortion. His wife’s decision to have an abortion decades ago has also influenced his strong anti-abortion stance, including his support for a heartbeat law that would severely restrict abortion rights in the state.
Additionally, Mr. Robinson has long held anti-LGBTQ views, rooted in his Christian faith. He has made disparaging remarks about the LGBTQ community, including stating that transgender women using women’s restrooms will be arrested. His controversial statements have sparked backlash and criticism, but have also solidified his support among conservative voters.
As the gubernatorial race heats up in North Carolina, all eyes will be on Mr. Robinson and Mr. Stein as they vie for the state’s highest office in what is sure to be a closely watched and contentious election.
