Spanish filmmaker Albert Moya finds inspiration in a unique Florentine residence
Two years ago, Spanish filmmaker Albert Moya stumbled upon a strange and captivating residence in the southwestern Florentine hills. The 2,475-square-foot apartment, once owned by an Italian soccer player with impeccable taste, became Moya’s haven for solitude and creativity.
Raised in a small village outside of Barcelona, Moya has made a name for himself in the fashion world, creating videos for luxury brands like Loewe and Louis Vuitton. However, his true passion lies in filmmaking, and he came to Italy to work on the script for his debut feature film, a project exploring themes of family dynamics.
Upon discovering the apartment, Moya was struck by its unique blend of history and modernity. Situated in a 14th-century Tuscan estate that once belonged to the Medicis, the space featured Renaissance-era frescoes, oak window frames, and a large garden filled with cypress trees. The previous owner had adorned the rooms with shiny wood paneling, creating a striking contrast to the ancient architecture.
Moya’s vision for the apartment was one of purity and simplicity. He eschewed furniture and decorations, opting instead for a minimalist aesthetic that emphasized the space’s natural beauty. With the help of architect Guillermo Santomà, Moya transformed the apartment into a serene and productive environment, perfect for writing and creative work.
Despite the apartment’s cinematic quality, Moya has chosen a different location for his upcoming film. However, Florence has provided him with the inspiration and solitude he needs to bring his vision to life. As he watches the sun set behind the hills, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the Florentine landscape, Moya finds solace and creativity in his unique Italian retreat.
