Renowned Artists Stanley Whitney and Marina Adams Find Inspiration in New Hamptons Home
In 1973, painter Stanley Whitney moved into a loft in downtown Manhattan, where he would later meet and marry fellow artist Marina Adams. For 50 years, they lived and worked in the same space, raising their son and creating vibrant, abstract art. However, in 2019, they decided it was time for a change and began searching for a new home.
Their real estate agent introduced them to artist Jack Ceglic and architect Manuel Fernandez-Casteleiro, who had designed a stunning home in East Hampton. Impressed by the open interiors and natural surroundings, Whitney and Adams purchased a plot of land in Bridgehampton and enlisted Ceglic and Fernandez-Casteleiro to design a new dwelling for them.
The couple’s only request was for the home to include two bedrooms, guest quarters, and studios for their art. The designers took inspiration from the couple’s Brooklyn studios and love of nature, incorporating elements like swiveling doors and preserving existing plants on the property.
The result is a modern, minimalist home that blends city loft aesthetics with the tranquility of the countryside. Each corner of the main building serves a specific purpose, from a study to a professional-grade kitchen. The open, central “plaza” welcomes guests with art, comfortable seating, and a record collection, reflecting the couple’s love of food, music, and art.
One of the highlights of the new home is the custom-built studios for Whitney and Adams. Designed as sanctuaries for their creative work, the studios feature ample natural light and space for their artistic endeavors. Whitney notes that the light in the new space allows him to achieve colors he wouldn’t elsewhere, enhancing his artistic process.
Ultimately, the artists find inspiration not only in the natural light and surroundings of their new home but also in the company of their friends and collaborators. As they gather for tea and cake, they joke about never wanting to leave, highlighting the sense of community and creativity that defines their new Hamptons residence.
As Whitney and Adams continue to create and thrive in their new environment, their home stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and the pursuit of artistic excellence.
