Tragedy struck at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility in Atlanta as two workers lost their lives and another was seriously injured in an accident on Tuesday. The incident occurred while the workers were servicing a Delta plane at the airline’s wheel and brake shop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The deceased workers were identified as Mirko Marweg, 58, and Luis Aldarondo, 37, while the name of the injured individual has not been released. The cause of the accident remains unclear, prompting a full investigation by both the airline and local authorities.

In a statement, Delta Air Lines expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their team members and the injury of another, pledging to cooperate with the investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration has also been informed of the incident and is in communication with the airline.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, a union representing many airline industry workers, called for a thorough investigation into the deaths. Despite Delta’s workforce largely not being part of the union, solidarity was shown for the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Local authorities and airport officials offered their support and condolences to the affected families, with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressing his sympathy and hopes for the swift recovery of the injured worker. The incident, which involved a plane that arrived from Las Vegas, did not disrupt air traffic at the busy airport.

Delta Air Lines, headquartered in Atlanta, is now focused on understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident as the world’s busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers grapples with this heartbreaking event.
