Bedfordshire Police Chief Constable Trevor Rodenhurst and Police and Crime Commissioner John Tizard are standing firm in their support of the Channel 4 program “24 Hours In Police Custody,” despite calls from Luton Borough Council to end their participation in the show. The council claims that the program fuels negative perceptions of Luton, damaging the town’s reputation.

In a leaked draft letter, the council urged the police to withdraw from the show, citing concerns about the impact it has on the community’s sense of identity and reputation. However, in a joint response, Chief Constable Rodenhurst and PCC Tizard defended their involvement in the program, stating that it plays a crucial role in showcasing the work of Bedfordshire officers and promoting a positive public perception of the area.

The documentary series, which follows police officers as they investigate crimes in Bedfordshire and beyond, has been praised for its transparency and contribution to public understanding of police work. Despite the council’s concerns, the police officials remain committed to the show, emphasizing its role in engaging younger audiences and supporting their efforts to make Luton and Bedfordshire safer.

While the debate continues, it is clear that both sides hold strong opinions on the matter, with the police officials emphasizing the positive impact of the program and the council highlighting the potential negative consequences for the town. As the discussion unfolds, the future of Bedfordshire Police’s participation in “24 Hours In Police Custody” remains uncertain.
