Julie Robinson Belafonte, a trailblazing dancer, actress, and activist who, alongside her husband, singer Harry Belafonte, used their high profiles to champion civil rights and integration in the United States, passed away on March 9 in Los Angeles at the age of 95.

Born in Manhattan in 1928 to liberal parents of Russian Jewish descent, Julie, known for her talent and beauty, embarked on a diverse career in the arts. She excelled in dance, eventually becoming a student-teacher at the renowned Katherine Dunham School of Dance and the first white member of the all-Black Dunham dance company.

Julie’s life took a significant turn when she met Harry Belafonte on the set of “Carmen Jones” in 1954. Despite facing societal backlash for their interracial relationship, the couple married in Mexico in 1957, challenging norms and breaking barriers in a time when interracial marriage was still illegal in many states.

Throughout their 50-year marriage, Julie stood by Harry’s side as they fought for civil rights, hosting fundraisers for organizations like the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She played a pivotal role in the movement, even co-founding SNCC’s women’s division with actress Diahann Carroll.

Julie’s dedication to social justice extended beyond her husband’s activism. She organized a women’s march against the Vietnam War and produced documentaries highlighting African cultural heritage and the resilience of the Mardi Gras Indian tradition.

After their divorce in 2007, Julie continued to lead a purposeful life, serving as a matriarch to her blended family and producing impactful documentaries. Her legacy as a champion of equality and diversity lives on through her children, stepchildren, and grandchildren.

Julie Robinson Belafonte’s remarkable life and contributions to the fight for equality will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
