The Biden administration’s top drug official, Rahul Gupta, has called for an independent investigation into the controversial decision to clear 23 elite Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned drug before the 2021 Summer Olympics. The swimmers were found to have tested positive for the banned heart drug trimetazidine, or TMZ, but were not suspended or publicly identified before the Games, where they went on to win five medals, including three golds.

Dr. Gupta, who is also a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) executive committee, expressed his commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all athletes and called for rigorous investigations into any potential wrongdoing. The handling of the positive tests has sparked outrage among Olympians and raised questions about a possible cover-up by antidoping authorities.

WADA officials defended their decision not to appeal the Chinese authorities’ clearance of the swimmers, citing the lack of evidence of wrongdoing. However, they admitted that their own protocols were not followed in the case, as no hearings were held with the affected swimmers to determine how the drug entered their systems. WADA also accepted the findings of Chinese state security services without independent verification, further raising concerns about the transparency of the process.

The controversy has led to calls for further investigations from government officials, including Germany’s sports minister, and could overshadow the upcoming Americas Sports Council meeting in Washington. The event, which brings together representatives from over 40 countries, will feature presentations from WADA officials, including President Witold Banka and Director General Olivier Niggli.

As the fallout from the positive tests continues, Dr. Gupta emphasized the importance of ongoing reform within WADA to protect the integrity of the global antidoping system. He warned of the risks posed by bad actors seeking to undermine the system and stressed the need for continued efforts to stay ahead of evolving threats.

The controversy surrounding the clearance of the Chinese swimmers highlights the challenges faced by antidoping authorities in ensuring fair competition and maintaining the trust of athletes and the public. The call for an independent investigation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in upholding the principles of clean sport.
