Boston Dynamics’ humanoid robot, Atlas, has officially retired after more than a decade of captivating audiences with its impressive feats of agility and mobility. The company announced the arrival of a new generation of humanoid robots, also named Atlas, designed for real-world commercial and industrial applications.
The original Atlas, known for its outdoor running, dancing, and acrobatic back flips, will now reside in Boston Dynamics’ “robot retirement home” as a part of their office lobby museum. The robot was initially created for research purposes and was not intended for commercial use.
In a farewell video posted on social media, Boston Dynamics highlighted the accomplishments of the old Atlas, showcasing its ability to navigate various terrains and perform tasks. The new model boasts improved features, including a spinning head, leaner design, and enhanced mobility capabilities.
The company’s commercial models, such as Spot and Stretch, have already made significant strides in various industries. The new Atlas is set to further advance automotive manufacturing capabilities in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company, the owner of Boston Dynamics.
Despite facing challenges and mishaps during its training, the original Atlas paved the way for advancements in robotics and inspired future generations of roboticists. With the introduction of the new Atlas, Boston Dynamics continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field of robotics.
