The largest luxury watch fair in Switzerland, Watches and Wonders Geneva, is set to open on April 9 amidst a backdrop of a slowdown in the Swiss watch industry. With more than 45,000 visitors expected to attend and 54 exhibiting watch brands, the show comes at a crucial time for the industry.

Following a recent decline in watch export values for the first time in two years, exhibitors at the fair see it as an opportunity to reignite momentum for their brands. Laurent Dordet, chief executive of Hermès’s watchmaking division, believes the timing of the show is ideal given the current market context.

Rolf Studer, co-chief executive of Oris watches, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of face-to-face interactions in an industry facing various challenges. The decline in watch exports, particularly in the Chinese market, has prompted industry experts to call for a reevaluation of the current sales strategy.

Despite the industry’s challenges, Watches and Wonders Geneva continues to attract global attention, with a growing interest in Swiss watchmaking. The addition of new exhibitors and a third day to the schedule reflects the show’s expanding reach and impact.

The show’s efforts to engage the public and promote the watchmaking industry to a younger generation are seen as positive steps towards ensuring future growth. With a range of events planned, including children’s workshops and a street party, the fair aims to make the industry more accessible and less elitist.

While some major brands have chosen not to exhibit at the fair, citing expenses and a disconnect from consumers, exhibitors who do participate see the event as a valuable investment. The presence of industry figures and watch buyers at the fair also presents opportunities for brands to showcase their latest offerings and engage with potential customers.

Overall, Watches and Wonders Geneva serves as a platform for the Swiss watch industry to navigate challenges, showcase innovation, and connect with a global audience, reaffirming its status as the premier luxury watch fair in the world.
