Title: Brooklyn Artist Combines Love of Ceramics and Botanicals in Unique Collection

For over 20 years, Melissa Goldstein worked as a magazine photo editor, immersing herself in the world of imagery. However, it wasn’t until she moved to Brooklyn and began rehabilitating the garden behind her brownstone that she found a way to merge her interests in Scandinavian ceramics, botanical illustrations, and Japanese woodblock prints. This fusion led to the creation of her brand, MG by Hand, specializing in fine English porcelain ceramics adorned with floral motifs.

Goldstein started hand-making everyday dinnerware in her home studio in Carroll Gardens, decorating the pieces with cobalt stain floral designs inspired by her garden. Her latest collections, Poppy and Cherry, draw inspiration from Dutch Delftware while showcasing local flora like black irises, poppies, and flowering quince. Fired in a gas kiln for 12 to 15 hours, these pieces exude a timeless elegance with a touch of modernity.

With prices starting at $65, Goldstein’s creations are available in select shops and online at mgbyhand.com. Each piece reflects her passion for blooming trees and botanical beauty, making them a unique addition to any home. Goldstein’s journey from magazine editor to ceramic artist showcases the power of following one’s passions and finding inspiration in unexpected places.
