The Cannes Film Festival is set to showcase an impressive lineup of films this year, with movies directed by renowned filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola, David Cronenberg, and Yorgos Lanthimos competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or award.

Coppola’s highly anticipated film, “Megalopolis,” marks his return to the director’s chair after a decade-long hiatus. The plot of the movie has been kept under wraps, but Coppola has described it as a futuristic tale about a man striving to build a utopian society in the heart of Manhattan.

Joining Coppola in the competition are directors like Cronenberg, who will premiere “The Shrouds,” a chilling story about a widower’s attempt to communicate with the deceased through a mysterious machine. Lanthimos will present “Kinds of Kindness,” starring Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe, promising another unique and captivating cinematic experience.

Other notable films in contention for the Palme d’Or include Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez,” a musical crime comedy featuring Selena Gomez, and Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” a poignant story about a young girl living in poverty in England.

Despite initial concerns about the impact of last year’s Hollywood strikes on the festival’s lineup, Cannes’s artistic director Thierry Frémaux assured that American cinema will be well represented this year. Three out of the 19 competing films are by American directors, including Paul Schrader’s “Oh Canada,” a comedy starring Uma Thurman and Richard Gere.

The festival will also feature high-profile movies out of competition, such as George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: an American Saga,” offering a diverse selection of cinematic experiences for attendees.

The jury, led by director Greta Gerwig, will have the challenging task of selecting the Palme d’Or winner, to be announced at the closing ceremony on May 25. Additionally, legendary filmmaker George Lucas will be honored with an Honorary Palme d’Or for his significant contributions to the world of cinema, adding an extra layer of excitement to this year’s event.
