The art world was buzzing with excitement this week as two prestigious events brought together artists, philanthropists, and cultural icons in New York City.
On Wednesday night, the New Museum’s Spring Gala took place at the former Staten Island Ferry terminal, now home to Cipriani South Street. Despite the howling wind and broken umbrellas outside, inside the venue, actress Tracee Ellis Ross stole the show in a stunning sky-blue bodysuit under a black-and-blue sleeveless dress. The event, which raised $2.1 million for the museum, honored artists Mickalene Thomas and George Condo, and drew a star-studded crowd including Leonardo DiCaprio, Cindy Sherman, and Jeff Koons.
The following evening, the Museum of Modern Art hosted the Black Arts Council benefit, celebrating the group’s mission to support Black artists and professionals at the museum. The event, which raised around $500,000, honored artist Glenn Ligon and scholar Sherrilyn Ifill. Attendees enjoyed cocktails in the museum lobby before moving upstairs for a dinner featuring burrata and halibut. MoMA director Glenn Lowry praised the Black Arts Council for their contributions to the cultural ecosystem of New York City.
Both events showcased the vibrant and diverse art community in the city, highlighting the importance of supporting and celebrating artists from all backgrounds.
