American Olympic track and field athletes are speaking out against a controversial part of their uniform for the upcoming Paris Games this summer. The red, white, and blue leotard that barely covers the bikini line has sparked outrage among athletes and fans alike.

The uniform, which was shared on social media, featured a design that left little to the imagination. While Nike consulted with several athletes, including sprinters Sha’Carri Richardson and Athing Mu, the final product did not sit well with many.

The post from Citius Mag quickly circulated on social media, drawing immediate pushback from athletes like Olympic hurdler Queen Harrison and Paralympian long jumper Jaleen Roberts. The criticism centered around the revealing nature of the uniform and the lack of options for athletes.

Retired track athlete Lauren Fleshman called the uniform a “costume born of patriarchal forces” and questioned its necessity in women’s sports. However, Olympic gold medalist pole vaulter Katie Moon defended Nike, emphasizing that athletes have a choice in what they wear.

Despite the controversy, Moon tried on the uniform herself and found it to be comfortable and secure. She reassured fellow athletes that the design was not as problematic as it appeared on the mannequin.

As the debate continues, it is clear that athletes are advocating for more inclusive and comfortable uniform options for women in sports. The upcoming Paris Games will undoubtedly showcase a range of athletic talents, but the discussion around uniforms highlights the importance of empowering athletes to feel confident and supported in their attire.
