President Biden’s State of the Union speech has sparked controversy and criticism from prominent political pundits who have accused him of delivering more of a campaign speech than an overview of the state of the country.
During his speech, Biden directly attacked former President Donald Trump, a move that was deemed unprecedented and overly partisan by critics. AEI Senior Fellow Marc Thiessen, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, took to social media to express his dismay, stating that Biden’s speech was an “utter disgrace” and should not be allowed to happen again.
Georgetown Law Professor Randy Barnett also criticized the speech, questioning if there has ever been a State of the Union address as partisan as Biden’s. Conservative radio host Mark Levin described the speech as “cheap and tawdry,” while former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer noted that Biden’s delivery and tone were off-putting.
Pro-Palestinian protesters also attempted to disrupt the State of the Union address near the Capitol, further adding to the chaotic atmosphere surrounding the event.
In response to the criticism, White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates defended Biden’s speech, stating that the President had delivered a strong message and dismissing the negative feedback as mere complaints from detractors.
