Former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, shocking the public and raising questions about the BBC’s handling of the case. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy is set to speak with BBC director general Tim Davie to discuss the organization’s response to the situation.
Edwards admitted to having 41 indecent images of children, including seven category A images, the most serious classification. The investigation into Edwards began after a phone seized as part of an unrelated probe revealed his participation in a WhatsApp conversation with convicted paedophile Alex Williams, who shared the images with him.
The BBC stated that they were made aware in confidence in November 2023 of Edwards’ arrest on suspicion of serious offences, but no charges had been brought against him at the time. Edwards resigned from the BBC in April citing medical advice, and the corporation faces scrutiny over why they continued to pay him his salary for five months after his resignation.
The law defines “making” indecent images broadly, including actions such as downloading, storing, or receiving images. Sentences for such offenses can range from six months to three years in prison, with the possibility of a community order with a sex offender treatment program.
