Esquilino Neighborhood in Rome Undergoes Revitalization
Rome’s Esquilino neighborhood, situated between the iconic Colosseum and the tracks leading to Termini station, has recently undergone a remarkable transformation. Once a neglected area, Esquilino is now buzzing with new life and energy, thanks to a wave of new establishments and cultural initiatives.
In recent years, Esquilino has seen the opening of Palazzo Merulana, a historic building turned contemporary arts and cultural center showcasing local 20th-century painters. The neighborhood’s main square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, has also been revitalized with new green spaces, a playground, and a basketball court. A charming cafe named Horti Magici has taken over a former storage shed in the park, offering brunch classics and evening aperitifs.
Several new eateries and bars have also popped up in Esquilino, adding to the neighborhood’s vibrant atmosphere. Forno Conti & Co., a bakery founded by a fourth-generation pastry chef, attracts customers with its unique breakfast pastries and croissants. Machiavelli 64 offers small-batch Italian wines paired with inventive dishes, while Casadante provides a unique dining experience in a former auto body shop.
Further adding to Esquilino’s appeal are Drink Kong, a cocktail bar serving Japanese liquors, and Nite Kong, a champagne bar with futuristic décor. The contemporary pizzeria Ardecore, designed by local architects, has also recently opened its doors in the neighborhood.
With its mix of cultural attractions, culinary delights, and trendy bars, Esquilino is quickly becoming a must-visit destination in Rome. As the neighborhood looks towards the future, residents and visitors alike are embracing the new energy and excitement that now defines Esquilino.
