Title: Doctors Warn Measles Vaccines from the 1970s and ’80s May Be Wearing Off

As the measles outbreak continues to spread in Florida, doctors are warning that individuals who were vaccinated for measles in the 1970s or ’80s may have decreased immunity due to the passage of time.

The measles vaccine was first introduced in 1968, followed by the MMR vaccine in 1971, which provides protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. Despite the success of these vaccines in eliminating measles in the U.S. in 2000, some individuals who received vaccinations in the ’70s and ’80s may need to check their immunity status.

USF College of Public Health associate professor Jill Roberts recommends that those in their 40s and 50s, who received vaccinations during that time, consult with their healthcare provider to determine if their immunity has waned. Dr. Jacob Glanville, a virology expert, also suggests considering a measles titer test to measure immunity levels.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a clinical professor of medicine, emphasizes the importance of measles vaccinations, especially with recent outbreaks in under-vaccinated communities. He suggests considering a booster shot if immunity levels are low.

As of February 29, a total of 41 measles cases have been reported in 16 U.S. jurisdictions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urges individuals to stay vigilant and consider getting vaccinated if needed.
